How Storage Conditions Affect Self-Adhesive Label Materials

We often talk about label material selection and printing performance, but there is another part of the process that is sometimes overlooked: storage.

A good self-adhesive material can still develop problems if it is stored in an unsuitable environment for a long time.

During our daily production work, we pay close attention to temperature, humidity, packaging and handling because these factors can influence the final performance of pressure-sensitive label materials.

Keep Temperature Relatively Stable

Large temperature changes can affect the physical properties of adhesive materials.

For example, moving materials repeatedly between a cold warehouse and a warm production area may create condensation on the surface.

Before printing or converting, materials should have enough time to adapt to the production environment.

Humidity Matters for Paper Labels

Paper facestocks can absorb moisture from the surrounding environment.

When humidity changes significantly, paper may expand or contract.

This can influence:

  • Printing registration
  • Die-cutting
  • Web tension
  • Label flatness
  • Application performance

For paper-based self-adhesive labels, stable storage conditions are therefore particularly important.

Protect Materials From Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight can increase the temperature of the material and may affect certain adhesives, coatings and printed surfaces over time.

Keeping rolls or sheets away from direct sunlight is a simple way to reduce unnecessary environmental exposure.

Keep Rolls Properly Packaged

Original packaging should be maintained whenever possible.

Packaging helps protect label materials from dust, moisture and mechanical damage.

Roll edges should also be protected because damaged edges can create problems during unwinding and converting.

Avoid Excessive Pressure During Storage

Heavy objects should not be placed directly on label rolls or sheets.

Excessive pressure can deform cores, compress edges or change the winding condition of the roll.

These issues may not be obvious until the material is loaded onto a printing or converting machine.

Allow Material to Acclimatize

One practical step we often recommend is acclimatization.

If label materials have been transported through a significantly different temperature environment, allowing them to reach the production environment gradually can reduce condensation and dimensional changes.

The exact acclimatization time depends on the packaging, material structure and environmental difference.

What About Finished Labels?

Finished labels also require suitable storage.

If printed labels are stored in a humid environment, paper materials may change dimension and adhesive performance can also be affected.

For labels containing variable information or barcodes, poor storage conditions may also affect print readability.

A Simple Storage Checklist

Before using stored label materials, we recommend checking:

  • Is the original packaging intact?
  • Are the roll edges damaged?
  • Has the material been exposed to moisture?
  • Is there visible condensation?
  • Has the material been stored near heat?
  • Has the roll been deformed?
  • Has the material been stored for a long period?

If anything looks unusual, testing a small quantity before full production is usually a sensible step.

In our experience, label quality is not determined only when the material is manufactured. Transportation, storage, printing, converting and final application are all connected.

Good storage is a simple part of the process, but it can make a noticeable difference to production stability.
