How to Choose the Right Label Material for Different Product Surfaces

When customers ask us about self-adhesive labels, one of the first questions we usually ask is not “What size do you need?” but “What surface will the label be applied to?”

This sounds simple, but the surface has a direct influence on label performance. A material that works well on a smooth carton may not perform the same way on a plastic container, metal surface, curved bottle, or rubber product.

After working with different label applications for many years, we have found that choosing the right label material should start with the application environment rather than the appearance of the label.

1. Smooth Paper and Carton Surfaces

Paperboard and coated cartons are relatively easy surfaces for pressure-sensitive labels. Paper facestock with permanent adhesive is commonly used for product information, packaging, shipping and general identification.

For applications requiring a more refined appearance, semi-gloss, coated or textured paper can be considered. The final choice depends on the printing process, surface finish and required durability.

2. Plastic Surfaces

Plastic containers are widely used in food, cosmetics, chemicals and household products. PP, PE and PET label materials are often considered for these applications.

However, not all plastics behave in the same way. Some plastic surfaces have relatively low surface energy, which can make adhesion more difficult.

In our experience, the adhesive and facestock should be evaluated together. Simply choosing a stronger adhesive does not always solve the problem.

3. Curved Bottles and Containers

Curved surfaces create another challenge. If the label material is too rigid or the adhesive does not have sufficient initial tack, the label may lift from the edges after application.

For curved packaging, we normally pay attention to three points:

  • Material flexibility
  • Adhesive initial tack
  • Label size and shape

A thinner film or more flexible facestock may provide better conformity to the container.

4. Metal Surfaces

Metal is commonly found on industrial equipment, tools, electronic components and other products.

For these applications, resistance to oil, chemicals, abrasion and temperature may be more important than appearance.

Synthetic materials such as PET or PP can be considered when the label needs to remain readable for a longer period.

5. Rubber and Difficult Surfaces

Rubber surfaces can be particularly challenging because their composition, texture and surface conditions vary.

Before selecting a tire label or industrial label, we recommend testing the actual rubber surface rather than relying only on general material specifications.

Temperature, dust, oil and surface curvature can all influence final adhesion.

What We Normally Check Before Recommending a Material

When developing a label solution, we usually look at:

  1. The surface material
  2. Surface shape
  3. Application temperature
  4. Storage temperature
  5. Exposure to water, oil or chemicals
  6. Required label life
  7. Printing method
  8. Application speed

These factors help us determine the appropriate combination of facestock, adhesive and liner.

A label is a small part of a product, but its performance depends on many details. In our daily work, we have found that testing the complete material structure under the actual application conditions is often more useful than choosing a label only from a catalog.
